We, the undersigned organizations and individuals, express our deep concern regarding the recent revelations about the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) “intentions” to utilize its role as host of the 28th Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) “to promote fossil fuel deals.”
Leaked briefing documents indicate that the UAE’s COP28 team has developed talking points to discuss fossil fuel deals with at least 15 nations during pre-COP meetings. These discussions reportedly involve proposals for collaboration between the UAE’s state oil company, Adnoc, and various countries on oil and gas projects.
These actions by the UAE raise serious concerns as they go against the intended purpose of COP28. The primary goal of COP28 is to expedite efforts to combat climate change, focusing on mitigation and adaptation, rather than promoting the interests of the fossil fuel industry.
We urge the UAE government to reconsider its plans and refrain from utilizing COP28 as a platform for fossil fuel deals. Instead, we encourage the UAE to leverage its position as host to champion ambitious climate action and emphasize a swift and equitable transition away from fossil fuels. We also urge all participating governments in COP28 to abstain from engaging in discussions that promote fossil fuels and instead focus on constructive discussions that advance the transition to renewable energy sources.
We commend the UAE and world governments for their efforts in transitioning away from fossil fuels despite the challenges.
The fight against climate change is a shared responsibility, and we must work together to build a sustainable future for all.
Signed,
